The New Patriotic Party(NPP) in the Ashanti Region has organised a vigil in Kumasi to show solidarity with its Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following his conviction and sentencing.

The gathering, which is taking place at the DMB Campaign Office in Kumasi, has brought together party executives, constituency leaders and supporters who have turned out to express their support for the regional chairman.

    Vigil

The vigil comes as Chairman Wontumi’s lawyers begin the process of appealing the court’s decision, seeking to overturn both his conviction and 20-year prison sentence.

An Accra High Court sentenced Chairman Wontumi to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after finding him guilty in a case involving illegal mining activities at Samreboi in the Western Region.

    Vigil

The NPP has said the vigil is meant to demonstrate the party’s support for its Ashanti Regional Chairman while his legal team pursues the appeal.

Party leaders and supporters have also used the gathering to call for his release and reaffirm their commitment to standing by him throughout the legal proceedings.

The NPP Ashanti vigil forms part of the party’s wider show of solidarity as it awaits the outcome of the appeal process.
