The number of cases pending before the Supreme Court challenging Ghana’s constitutional provisions on presidential term limits has increased to five following a fresh suit filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The latest case was filed by the NPP on July 30, 2026, against the Attorney-General. The development was disclosed by Deputy Attorney-General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, in a Facebook post on Friday, August 14, 2026.
The new suit brings to five the number of cases currently before the apex court concerning the constitutional provisions governing presidential term limits.
The cases pending before the Supreme Court are:
1.Azubila E. Salam v. The Attorney-General — J1/4/2026, filed on December 23, 2025.
2. Kenneth K.A. Kuranchie v. The Attorney-General — J1/20/2026, filed on June 30, 2026.
3. Ganiwu Alhassan v. The Attorney-General — J1/21/2026, filed on July 9, 2026.
4. Eric Appiah v. The Attorney-General — J1/26/2026, filed on July 20, 2026.
5. New Patriotic Party v. The Attorney-General — J1/27/2026, filed on July 30, 2026.
The latest case filed by the NPP adds to a growing number of legal challenges concerning Ghana’s presidential term limits and the constitutional conditions governing eligibility to contest the presidency.
The development comes amid increased political and public interest in the constitutional restrictions on presidential office and the circumstances under which an individual may qualify to run for president.
The Supreme Court is expected to consider the substantive arguments presented in the various cases, as well as the specific remedies being sought by the plaintiffs.
The outcome of the cases could provide further clarification on the interpretation and application of Ghana’s constitutional provisions on presidential term limits.
