Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey has announced that traffic along the stretch from Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange to Kaneshie First Light on the Darkuman-Kaneshie Highway will soon be disrupted to allow work on the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project.
Although he did not specify when the road closure will begin, the Mayor said motorists and commuters should expect temporary disruptions once work starts.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with 3news in August, Mr. Allotey also revealed that maintenance works on the Kaneshie Footbridge have been delayed because of ongoing activities under the GARID project near the Accra Academy Senior High School section of the highway.
According to him, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) is unable to carry out major rehabilitation works on both the road and the footbridge until the GARID project is completed.
The Mayor appealed to motorists and commuters to cooperate with the Assembly during the construction period, assuring the public that additional traffic task force personnel will be deployed to manage traffic and reduce congestion.
The GARID project became a priority following the devastating floods that hit parts of Accra on June 29, causing widespread destruction and disrupting daily life.
Experts believe the project will significantly improve the city’s drainage system, helping to reduce the impact of flooding and enhance Accra’s resilience during periods of heavy rainfall.
