The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially released the academic calendar for Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) for the 2026/2027 academic year, setting out a structured roadmap for both single track and transitional schools across the country.

According to details from the release, the new academic year will begin on September 8, 2026, marking the reopening of schools after the long vacation period. The calendar is designed to ensure a balanced academic cycle, combining teaching periods, examinations, holidays, and midterm breaks to support effective learning and school administration.

The first term is expected to run for approximately 15 weeks, ending on December 17, 2026. Students will then proceed on vacation from December 18, 2026 to January 4, 2027, allowing for the Christmas and New Year break. Within the first term, a two day midterm break has been scheduled for November 5 and 6, 2026, providing a short rest period for both students and teachers.

GES has also structured the second term to begin on January 5, 2027, continuing until March 25, 2027. Following the end of the second term, students will break from March 26 to April 19, 2027. This period is expected to allow schools to reset academic activities ahead of the final term of the year.

The third term will commence on April 20, 2027 and is scheduled to end on July 22, 2027, officially concluding the 2026/2027 academic year. The structure reflects GES’s continued effort to standardise the academic calendar across senior high institutions while ensuring adequate instructional time for syllabus completion.

Education authorities say the calendar is also aligned with national examination planning, including preparations for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, which typically requires significant academic adjustment within the final term. The structured timetable is expected to help schools manage teaching periods more efficiently while giving students sufficient time for revision and assessment.

The release of the calendar comes at a time when the education sector is focusing on improving learning outcomes, reducing congestion in academic schedules, and ensuring better alignment between school activities and national examination timelines. GES has in recent years emphasised predictability in the academic calendar to help parents, teachers, and students plan ahead more effectively.

Stakeholders in the education sector have often welcomed early publication of academic schedules, noting that it improves planning for both public and private school activities. It also allows for better coordination of extracurricular programmes, teacher training, and institutional development activities throughout the academic year.

The 2026/2027 calendar maintains the standard three term system used in Ghana’s secondary education system, while incorporating midterm breaks and vacation periods that aim to reduce academic pressure and improve student wellbeing.

GES is expected to circulate detailed circulars to regional education directorates and schools to ensure full compliance with the approved schedule. Schools are also expected to align their internal academic planning, including examinations, reporting periods, and remedial classes, with the national framework.

The release of the calendar marks an important step in preparing the country’s senior high education system for the upcoming academic cycle, providing clarity and structure for all stakeholders involved in secondary education.
