The Government of the Republic of India and the African Union have agreed to postpone the Fourth India–Africa Forum Summit, originally scheduled to take place in New Delhi from 28 to 31 May 2026, following consultations on evolving public health conditions in parts of Africa.
The decision was announced in a joint press release after discussions between Indian authorities, the Chairperson of the African Union and the African Union Commission, reflecting growing concern over health preparedness and response capacities across the continent.
According to the statement, both sides exchanged views on the current health situation affecting certain regions in Africa and reaffirmed the importance of strengthening continental systems for disease surveillance, emergency response and public health coordination. A key focus of the discussions was support for the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, which continues to play a central role in managing cross border health threats.

India reiterated its commitment to supporting African countries through technical assistance and cooperation with Africa CDC, stressing solidarity with African governments and populations as they respond to emerging health challenges. The statement underscored that the partnership between both sides remains grounded in mutual respect and long standing cooperation in health, development and capacity building.
The summit, which was expected to bring together heads of state, senior government officials and institutional leaders from both regions, is a major platform for India Africa relations, covering areas such as trade, infrastructure, health, technology and education. Its postponement reflects a cautious approach aimed at ensuring that all participating leaders and delegations can engage safely and fully.
Officials noted that the decision was taken to ensure inclusive participation, particularly for African leaders and stakeholders whose travel and attendance could be affected by current health conditions and related precautionary measures. The statement emphasised that the move was made out of prudence rather than political or diplomatic disagreement.

The India Africa Forum Summit has historically served as a key mechanism for strengthening South South cooperation, with previous editions focusing on expanding development finance, improving digital infrastructure partnerships and enhancing cooperation in healthcare systems. The fourth edition was expected to further deepen these areas of collaboration.
While no specific health crisis was named in the announcement, the reference to an “evolving health situation” points to broader concerns around disease preparedness and response coordination across parts of Africa. In recent years, the continent has faced periodic outbreaks of infectious diseases, prompting increased investment in regional health infrastructure and early warning systems.
The African Union has been working to strengthen its continental health architecture through Africa CDC, which coordinates responses to outbreaks and supports member states with technical expertise, surveillance systems and emergency response frameworks. The organisation has also been expanding partnerships with global institutions to improve resilience against future health threats.

India’s continued engagement with African health systems reflects its broader foreign policy approach of supporting capacity building in developing regions. Cooperation between India and African states has included training of health professionals, supply of medicines, vaccine collaboration and digital health initiatives.
The joint statement confirmed that new dates for the summit will be decided through mutual consultations and announced at a later stage. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining momentum in their partnership despite the postponement.
Diplomatic observers say the delay is unlikely to affect long term India Africa relations, which have expanded significantly over the past decade. Instead, it may allow both sides to better prepare for a more comprehensive and impactful summit once conditions stabilise.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the shared values underpinning the partnership, including solidarity, peace, development and prosperity, as both regions continue to navigate global health and economic challenges.
