Threads introduces Live Chats to bring real time conversations to social media moments

Meta is stepping up its competition in the social media space with the introduction of a new feature on its Threads platform designed to make conversations faster, more interactive, and more relevant in the moment.

The feature, called “Live Chats,” allows users to join public group conversations centered around live events such as sports games, music releases, or major cultural moments. Unlike traditional posts and comment threads, which can feel delayed and fragmented, Live Chats are built for instant interaction as events unfold.

According to reports, the feature enables users to send messages, photos, videos, links, and emoji reactions in real time, creating a more dynamic and immersive experience. Up to 150 participants can actively contribute to a Live Chat at once, while additional users can join as spectators, reacting to messages and participating in polls without directly posting.

Meta says the goal is to make Threads feel more “timely and relevant,” addressing one of the platform’s biggest early weaknesses. When Threads first launched, it struggled to match the real time nature of platforms like X, where users often turn for live updates, breaking news, and instant reactions.

The rollout of Live Chats is starting with a limited group of creators and communities, including sports discussions during major events like the NBA Playoffs. High profile media personalities and creators are expected to host chats, guiding conversations and driving engagement during live moments.

Users can access these chats in several ways, including through community feeds, shared posts, or by tapping a red “live” ring around a host’s profile picture. Even after a session ends, the chats remain visible and discoverable, allowing users to revisit discussions and catch up on what they missed.

What sets Live Chats apart from traditional group messaging is the added layer of real time features. These include live polls, countdowns, typing indicators, and even live updates tied to events like sports scores. The intention is to keep conversations aligned with what is happening at that exact moment, rather than reacting after the fact.

Moderation is also a key part of the feature. Hosts are given tools to manage discussions, including the ability to remove users or limit their participation. Meta has also integrated automatic systems to detect and remove content that violates its policies, alongside options for users to report inappropriate messages.

The introduction of Live Chats highlights a broader strategy by Meta to transform Threads into a stronger competitor in the real time social media space. Over the past year, the company has been steadily adding features such as improved search, hashtags, and chronological feeds, all aimed at making the platform more responsive and engaging.

Live Chats take this a step further by turning Threads into a hub for shared live experiences. Whether it is reacting to a football match, discussing an album release, or following a major global event, the feature is designed to bring users together in a way that feels immediate and communal.

Looking ahead, Meta has already outlined plans to expand the feature. Upcoming updates may include co hosting options, lock screen widgets that highlight live activity, and the ability to share chat messages directly to users’ feeds.

These additions suggest that Live Chats could evolve into a central part of how users interact on Threads, rather than just an optional feature. If successful, it could help the platform carve out a unique identity in a crowded social media landscape.

At its core, the move reflects a shift in how platforms are thinking about engagement. It is no longer just about posting content but about creating shared, real time experiences that keep users actively involved.

With Live Chats, Threads is not just trying to catch up, it is trying to redefine how conversations happen online in the moment.
