Motorists who use the N1 Highway, popularly known as the George Bush Highway, should prepare for intermittent traffic disruptions after the Ghana Highway Authority announced temporary weekend closures along sections of the busy corridor to allow construction works to continue.
The authority explained that the closures are necessary to facilitate T-beam launching works for the expansion of the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange Bridge, an important infrastructure project aimed at improving traffic flow along one of Accra’s most heavily used road networks.
According to the Ghana Highway Authority, the revised traffic management plan will take effect from Saturday, March 14, 2026, and will be implemented on weekends and official public holidays over a four-month period.
Temporary traffic closures planned
Under the arrangement, northbound traffic from Accra towards Madina will be temporarily closed during the T-beam launching operations. Each closure is expected to last between two and four hours while engineers carry out the construction works.
The Ghana Highway Authority noted that the schedule has been deliberately limited to weekends and holidays to reduce disruptions during the working week when traffic volumes are usually higher.
The revised plan follows an earlier attempt to close the Accra–Madina lane on March 9, which resulted in heavy gridlock along the corridor. Thousands of motorists were left stranded in severe congestion, forcing contractors to suspend the initial closure and redesign the traffic management plan.
Traffic flow adjustments during construction
To maintain movement along the corridor while construction continues, the southbound carriageway from Madina to Accra will be temporarily reconfigured. Instead of the usual four lanes flowing in a single direction, the road will operate with two lanes allocated to each direction, allowing vehicles to travel both ways on the same carriageway during the closures.
Authorities believe this temporary reconfiguration will help maintain traffic flow and reduce congestion while allowing contractors to complete the bridge expansion works safely.
Alternative routes announced
To ease pressure on the N1 corridor and help motorists bypass the construction zone, the Ghana Highway Authority has announced several alternative routes drivers can use during the closures.

Drivers travelling from Liberation Road towards Tema have been advised to use the Airport Bypass to Flowerpot Junction before joining the motorway towards Tema.
Motorists heading from Liberation Road to East Legon can travel through the Airport Bypass and the East Legon Underpass to access the East Legon area.
Those moving from J.J. Rawlings Road to Liberation Road through the George Bush Highway are advised to turn at Gulf House towards GIMPA Road, continue to the Fiesta Royale Hotel Junction, and then proceed along the highway past Villagio to reach Liberation Road.
Drivers travelling from Tema towards Liberation Road should continue along the N1 Highway through the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, turn left at the Fiesta Royale Hotel Junction onto North Airport Road, pass the Africa Regent Hotel, and then join Liberation Road.
Appeal for cooperation
The Ghana Highway Authority has urged motorists to avoid the immediate construction zone where possible, obey traffic signs and cooperate with traffic officers deployed along the corridor to manage the flow of vehicles.

Officials emphasized that the alternative routes were carefully selected to minimize delays, enhance safety and maintain smoother traffic movement while the bridge expansion project continues.
The authority also apologized for the inconvenience the temporary closures may cause and appealed to the public for patience and cooperation as the infrastructure improvement works progress.
The George Bush Highway is one of Accra’s most important transport arteries, linking several key areas including the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, Madina and the Accra–Tema Motorway. The ongoing bridge expansion project is expected to improve capacity and reduce congestion on the corridor once completed.
