Ghanaian rapper Medikal has officially been appointed as an ambassador for the “Red Means Stop” anti drug campaign spearheaded by the National Youth Authority as part of a nationwide effort to tackle substance abuse among young people in Ghana.

The announcement was made on March 12, 2026, by Ghana’s Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, during a ceremony held at the ministry in Accra. The appointment was witnessed by the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Osman Ayariga, who emphasised the importance of involving influential figures in the fight against drug abuse among the youth.

The “Red Means Stop” campaign was introduced to combat the growing abuse of a synthetic drug popularly known as “Red” among young people. Authorities say the drug has become increasingly prevalent in youth circles and poses serious health and social risks. Through the initiative, the National Youth Authority aims to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse while encouraging young people to adopt healthier and more responsible lifestyles.

Officials believe the involvement of Medikal will significantly strengthen the campaign’s reach. Known for his popularity among Ghanaian youth and his large social media following, the rapper is expected to use his influence to spread anti drug messages across schools, communities and digital platforms. The strategy reflects a growing trend of using entertainers and social media personalities to drive behavioural change campaigns targeted at younger audiences.

Speaking after his appointment, Medikal expressed appreciation for the opportunity and pledged to use his platform to make a meaningful impact in the fight against drug abuse. He noted that protecting the next generation from harmful substances is a cause he strongly believes in and promised to support the campaign through public engagement, music and social media advocacy.

As part of his role, the rapper is expected to participate in nationwide outreach programmes organised by the National Youth Authority. These activities will include school visits, community engagement events, media campaigns and youth mentorship programmes designed to educate young people about the dangers of drugs and empower them to make responsible life choices.

Authorities say the campaign will also involve workshops, public education drives and digital awareness initiatives to reach as many young people as possible. By combining advocacy, education and community mobilisation, the “Red Means Stop” initiative aims to build a national movement against substance abuse and reduce the rising number of young people experimenting with dangerous drugs.

The appointment of Medikal is also expected to strengthen collaboration between government institutions and Ghana’s creative industry. Shortly after his announcement as ambassador, the musician paid a courtesy visit to the youth minister to discuss how music, youth culture and digital platforms can be used to amplify the campaign’s message and encourage positive lifestyle choices among the youth.

Drug abuse has become an increasing concern in Ghana, particularly among young people between the ages of 12 and 35. Reports cited by officials indicate that tens of thousands of young people in the country are affected by substance use, including alcohol, marijuana, opioids and other narcotics. Authorities warn that synthetic drug mixtures such as “Red” are especially dangerous due to their unpredictable chemical composition and severe health effects.

The National Youth Authority says it will continue to partner with influencers, educators, community leaders and civil society organisations to expand the reach of the “Red Means Stop” campaign. Officials believe that sustained public education and youth engagement are essential in addressing the root causes of drug abuse and building a healthier future for Ghana’s young population.
