MTN Group has announced an expansion of its long standing partnership with Huawei to accelerate the deployment of artificial intelligence driven telecommunications networks across Africa. The initiative aims to modernize digital infrastructure, improve connectivity, and support the continent’s transition toward intelligent, automated telecom systems.

The new phase of collaboration was formalized through a memorandum of understanding signed during the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona. The agreement outlines plans for both companies to deepen cooperation in several areas, including AI powered network operations, broadband expansion, digital infrastructure development, and data driven services.

The partnership represents a strategic step toward building next generation telecom networks capable of managing themselves through advanced artificial intelligence systems. Executives from both companies say the collaboration will help accelerate Africa’s digital transformation while improving network performance and efficiency.

Building AI centric telecom infrastructure

A central focus of the agreement is the development of AI driven networks that can automatically manage complex telecommunications operations. The companies plan to introduce agent driven systems powered by AI copilots and intelligent agents capable of handling network planning, deployment, and operational processes with minimal human intervention.

The initiative is aligned with the industry goal of developing Level 4 Autonomous Networks, a technological stage where network operations become largely automated. These networks use artificial intelligence to analyze data in real time, detect faults, optimize performance, and adjust capacity to changing demand.

By implementing these technologies, MTN aims to shift from traditional human managed systems toward networks that can self optimize and evolve automatically. Industry experts believe this transition could significantly improve service quality, reduce operational costs, and accelerate the rollout of digital services across African markets.

Strengthening Africa’s digital economy

The collaboration between MTN and Huawei is also designed to support the broader development of Africa’s digital economy. MTN currently serves more than 300 million subscribers across multiple African countries, making it one of the largest mobile network operators on the continent.

As demand for digital services continues to grow, telecom operators are under increasing pressure to expand broadband connectivity, improve network reliability, and support emerging technologies such as cloud computing, mobile financial services, and smart infrastructure.

Through the partnership, the two companies plan to expand fixed wireless broadband solutions and enhance digital infrastructure in underserved regions. These initiatives are expected to improve internet access, support digital businesses, and create new opportunities for innovation across Africa.

The agreement also includes collaboration on data monetization strategies and environmental, social and governance initiatives. These efforts aim to ensure that the expansion of digital infrastructure contributes to sustainable economic growth while improving access to technology.

Ghana emerges as testing ground for AI networks

One of the most significant demonstrations of the partnership’s technological ambitions has already taken place in Ghana. MTN and Huawei recently completed the world’s first large scale deployment of the Alpha Antenna, a next generation radio technology designed to support AI driven network management.

The system incorporates advanced sensor units that allow network infrastructure to automatically collect and analyze operational data. Using this information, the network can dynamically adjust signal coverage, optimize capacity, and detect configuration errors in real time.

Initial tests following the deployment showed notable improvements in network performance. Traffic levels in deployment areas increased by about 6.8 percent, while maintenance efficiency improved significantly as many processes could be handled remotely without manual site visits.

The successful rollout in Ghana is seen as a major milestone in the evolution of intelligent telecom infrastructure and could serve as a blueprint for similar deployments across other African markets.

Long standing collaboration between the companies

MTN and Huawei have worked together for years on network modernization and digital innovation initiatives across Africa. Previous collaborations included the establishment of joint innovation laboratories designed to develop new digital technologies tailored to the continent’s unique needs.

MTN

The latest agreement builds on that foundation by shifting the partnership toward large scale deployment of intelligent network technologies. According to both companies, the transition from exploratory projects to a more structured strategic alliance will allow them to accelerate the adoption of advanced telecom systems across multiple markets.

Preparing for the future of connectivity

Industry analysts say the growing role of artificial intelligence in telecom infrastructure marks a fundamental shift in how networks are designed and managed. As data traffic continues to surge and digital services expand, traditional manual network management systems are becoming increasingly difficult to maintain.

AI powered telecom infrastructure could address these challenges by enabling networks to respond automatically to changing conditions, optimize resources in real time, and deliver more reliable connectivity to users.

For Africa, where digital connectivity remains uneven across regions, the deployment of intelligent networks could play a crucial role in closing the digital divide. Improved infrastructure could support economic development, enable digital entrepreneurship, and strengthen access to online services.

As MTN and Huawei move forward with their expanded partnership, the initiative is expected to shape the future of telecommunications across the continent, positioning Africa as an emerging hub for next generation AI driven network technologies.
