The Ghana Education Service (GES) has suspended Koforidua Secondary Technical School, New Juaben Senior High School and New Nsutem Senior Technical High School from all sports and extracurricular activities for two years following violence during an inter-schools competition.

The decision comes after reported clashes involving students during a recent competitive event in the Eastern Region, which resulted in injuries and property damage. Education authorities say the sanctions are intended to restore discipline and send a strong signal against misconduct at school-organised programmes.

In a directive issued after preliminary investigations, GES stated that the three schools will be barred from participating in sporting competitions, inter-school cultural events and other extracurricular engagements for the next two academic years.

Officials emphasised that the suspension is not an attack on student development but a corrective measure aimed at reinforcing discipline and accountability. School authorities have also been directed to strengthen internal supervision systems and implement measures to prevent future disturbances.

Stakeholders in the education sector have expressed concern over recurring incidents of violence during inter-school activities, warning that such behaviour undermines the purpose of sports and extracurricular programmes, which are designed to promote teamwork, unity and character development.

Parents and alumni groups are expected to engage school leadership and regional education authorities to assess the impact of the sanctions on students, particularly those preparing for regional and national competitions.

GES reiterated its commitment to maintaining safety and order within the educational system, stressing that discipline remains a core pillar of academic and character formation.
