Borussia Dortmund launches first African academy in Ghana

German football powerhouse Borussia Dortmund has officially opened its first African academy, the BVB International Academy Ghana, in Accra. The initiative is a partnership with Accra Shooting Stars FC and will develop young footballers aged 6–18 using Dortmund’s acclaimed youth development model.

The academy will combine high-level football training with education, leadership, nutrition, discipline, and personal development, ensuring a holistic approach to nurturing talent while staying rooted in Ghanaian football culture. Both boys and girls are eligible to participate, reflecting Dortmund’s commitment to inclusivity in youth development.

Ibrahim Tanko, former Borussia Dortmund midfielder and Ghana Black Stars legend, will serve as the academy’s ambassador. He highlighted that the program aims not only to improve technical skills but also to instill the mindset, discipline, and professionalism required to succeed at the highest levels of football.

The launch of the academy represents a major step for Dortmund’s global youth strategy, providing Ghanaian players the opportunity to develop under European training methodologies while maintaining strong ties to local football traditions.
