Speaker of Parliament, Alhaji Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has directed that the Anti-LGBTQI Bill be re-laid in Parliament and scheduled for consideration by the Business Committee. The directive comes amid renewed efforts to bring the controversial legislation to the floor for debate and potential passage.
The Speaker’s instruction tasks the Business Committee with determining the appropriate time for parliamentary deliberations on the bill, which seeks to impose stricter regulations and penalties regarding LGBTQI activities in Ghana. Lawmakers are expected to review the bill’s provisions, engage in debates, and consider amendments before any vote is taken.
The Anti-LGBTQI bill has been a contentious topic in Ghana, drawing attention from local civil society groups, religious organisations, and international stakeholders. Supporters argue the legislation aligns with Ghanaian cultural and moral values, while critics raise concerns over human rights and the country’s international commitments.

Speaker Bagbin emphasised that the re-introduction of the bill is in accordance with parliamentary procedures, ensuring that MPs have an opportunity to deliberate thoroughly before any legislative decision.
The Business Committee is now expected to schedule the bill for debate during an upcoming parliamentary sitting, setting the stage for a potentially heated discussion among lawmakers.
