President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has bestowed Senegal’s highest civilian honour on the national football team following their dramatic victory in the AFCON 2025 final, sealing a moment of national pride that will be remembered for generations. Head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw and all members of the Senegal squad were awarded the title of Commanders of the National Order of the Lion after their 1–0 win over Morocco on January 18, a match defined by tension, controversy, and resilience.
The ceremony, held at the Presidential Palace, celebrated not only Senegal’s footballing success but also the mental strength shown by the team under intense pressure. President Faye praised the players and technical staff for what he described as an extraordinary display of courage and unity in the face of adversity.
A Final marked by drama and determination
Senegal’s path to lifting their second AFCON title in four years was anything but smooth. The final against host nation Morocco unfolded amid chaotic scenes, with emotions running high throughout the contest. After a fiercely contested 90 minutes, the match was forced into extra time following a series of disputed refereeing decisions that sparked frustration within the Senegal camp.

One of the most dramatic moments came when Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch in protest over calls they felt were unjust, an incident that momentarily halted the match. Tensions escalated further when Morocco were awarded a penalty, which was ultimately missed a turning point that shifted the momentum back in Senegal’s favour.
In extra time, Pape Gueye emerged as the unlikely hero, scoring the decisive goal that sealed a 1–0 victory and sent Senegalese fans into celebration. The goal not only secured the trophy but symbolised a triumph of resolve in a match where discipline and belief were constantly tested.
National recognition and Presidential praise
In recognising the team, President Faye highlighted what he termed a “fighting spirit against refereeing bias”, commending the players for maintaining focus and composure despite the controversial circumstances. He described the AFCON victory as a reflection of Senegal’s resilience and collective strength as a nation.

Beyond the honours, the government announced significant rewards. Each player will receive 75 million CFA francs along with a 1,500 square-metre coastal plot, while members of the technical and support staff will receive 50 million CFA francs and smaller land allocations. The rewards were framed as a gesture of gratitude for bringing pride and joy to the nation.
For Senegal, the AFCON 2025 triumph has reinforced their status as one of Africa’s dominant footballing forces. More importantly, the recognition bestowed by President Faye underscores how deeply the team’s achievement resonates beyond the pitch as a unifying moment for the country.
As celebrations continue across Senegal, the legacy of this victory will be defined not only by silverware, but by the spirit with which it was won.
