Ghana has taken a major step toward modernising its air capabilities with the signing of a contract for four advanced Airbus helicopters with Airbus Helicopters, a subsidiary of the European aerospace giant Airbus. The deal, confirmed by Airbus and Ghana’s Ministry of Defence, underscores the country’s renewed focus on strengthening national security, emergency response, and transport operations within West Africa.
Strategic Defence Procurement Marks Airbus’ Return
Airbus Helicopters has secured the contract to supply Ghana with four new helicopters, marking a strategic return to the Ghanaian defence market and reinforcing long-term partnership ambitions between the manufacturer and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). While the financial terms of the agreement have not been publicly disclosed, the procurement aligns with Ghana’s broader defence modernisation agenda outlined in the 2026 national budget.
The helicopter package comprises:

- Two H175M helicopters, designed for multi-mission defence operations;
- One ACH175, intended for transport duties;
- One ACH160, a modern helicopter platform tailored for executive and strategic transport use.
According to Airbus, the H175M platform is engineered to support a wide range of missions, including tactical transport, search and rescue, emergency medical services, and disaster relief. This versatility makes the aircraft particularly suitable for Ghana’s defence and civil support needs.
Strengthening Airlift and Emergency Response
The H175M super-medium helicopter, which has been in service globally since 2014, is known for its balance of range, payload capacity, and operational efficiency. Its acquisition is expected to significantly enhance Ghana’s ability to respond swiftly to security threats, humanitarian emergencies, and natural disasters.
Meanwhile, the ACH160 stands out as one of the most technologically advanced helicopters in its class, featuring a spacious cabin, modern avionics, and improved situational awareness. These attributes make it well-suited for high-level transport missions while maintaining safety and operational efficiency.
Airbus officials have described Ghana’s order as a strategic investment that reflects confidence in the manufacturer’s platforms and a renewed commitment to long-term cooperation. The company emphasized that the helicopters will support defence, security, humanitarian, and logistical operations across Ghana and the wider region.
Part of Ghana’s Defence Modernisation Drive
The helicopter acquisition forms part of Ghana’s ongoing defence modernisation programme, first announced in the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy presented to Parliament. The government committed to strengthening the operational capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces through the acquisition of modern air assets, including helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.

This initiative responds to the need to replace ageing equipment while enhancing readiness to address emerging security challenges. With the addition of modern rotorcraft, the Ghana Air Force is expected to expand its operational reach across:
- national defence and internal security missions,
- border surveillance and patrols,
- maritime safety and support operations, and
- humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts.
Parliamentary Approval and Delivery Timeline
Parliamentary approval processes have previously outlined contract agreements between Ghana and Airbus Helicopters covering the supply of modern aircraft as part of a broader defence procurement programme. These approvals reflect legislative backing for the government’s plan to upgrade the country’s air capabilities and ensure value for money in strategic defence investments.
Deliveries of the four helicopters are expected to take place over a four-year period beginning in 2026, allowing for phased integration into the Ghana Air Force’s existing fleet and operational systems.
Boosting Regional Security and Aviation Capacity
The addition of these Airbus helicopters positions Ghana among the leading adopters of modern aerial platforms in West Africa. Beyond strengthening national defence, the new fleet is expected to enhance Ghana’s ability to support regional peacekeeping missions, emergency medical evacuations, and cross-border humanitarian operations.
By combining multi-mission military helicopters with advanced transport platforms, Ghana is reinforcing its commitment to security, rapid response, and regional stability. The acquisition represents not only an upgrade in hardware but also a strategic investment in the future readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces.
