GEA clarifies no permanent staff terminated after project contracts expired

The Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) has clarified that no permanent staff members have been terminated following public discussions surrounding an internal memo on expired project-based contracts. The memo which circulated widely created concern among workers who feared it signaled mass layoffs within the agency. In response, the agency leadership has firmly stated that only project related contracts that had reached their natural expiration were affected and that all permanent employees remain at post.
According to management, the agency periodically recruits professionals on project contracts to support specific government initiatives and donor funded programs. These contracts are legally time bound and automatically end once the project is completed. The agency noted that this is standard practice across many public institutions and does not reflect downsizing or restructuring of the permanent workforce.
The clarification was issued to address misinformation and prevent panic among staff and stakeholders. Management emphasized that the agency continues to operate normally and remains committed to its mandate of supporting small and medium scale enterprises nationwide. They also assured staff that additional engagements will be organized to improve communication and prevent future misunderstandings.
Some employees who were affected by the expiration of their project contracts expressed disappointment, noting that the transition has come at a difficult time. However, management reiterated that contract employees were aware of the terms of engagement at the time of recruitment. The agency encouraged them to explore upcoming opportunities as new projects are expected to begin in 2025.
Industry analysts say the incident highlights the need for stronger communication within public sector institutions, especially in cases involving employment issues. Clear information helps build trust and prevents fear from spreading among workers. The Ghana Enterprises Agency has pledged to implement improved communication protocols to enhance transparency going forward.
The agency also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting job creation through technical assistance, funding programs, and capacity building initiatives. As it prepares for the launch of new economic empowerment projects next year, management believes that its human resource structure remains strong and capable of delivering on national development targets.
