The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will on December 16 present to President John Dramani Mahama a comprehensive report on the mediation of the long-standing Bawku conflict. The submission follows the conclusion of the traditional ruler’s months-long efforts to bring peace to the troubled area.

According to the Presidency’s notice, the presentation is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Jubilee House. The Asantehene’s mediation process involved extensive consultations with the rival factions, representatives of the Kusaasi and Mamprusi groups, including separate and joint meetings aimed at reconciling opposing claims.

During prior sessions, the Asantehene invited both sides to engage in frank dialogue. Participants included chiefs, youth and opinion leaders, and community stakeholders. In the final session, held at Manhyia Palace, the Asantehene reportedly commended delegates for civility and called on them to see themselves as one people regardless of their traditional affiliations.

The conflict in Bawku has a complex history. It is rooted in competing chieftaincy and territorial claims, often tied to colonial-era boundary demarcations. Over decades, the dispute has led to loss of lives, displacement of many residents and disruption of livelihoods.

National observers and civil society groups have welcomed the Asantehene’s mediation, viewing it as a critical attempt to restore peace and stability in the region. The involvement of a traditional authority with moral weight is seen as a valuable complement to state-led reconciliation efforts.

With the report’s presentation to the President, many hope concrete action will follow. Key expectations include prioritising community reconciliation, guaranteeing security, rebuilding trust among factions and implementing lasting measures to prevent future conflict.

The November–December mediation process and its planned submission mark a major milestone in Ghana’s peacebuilding efforts. As the nation watches the outcome, there is optimism that Bawku may finally begin a path toward lasting peace and unity.
