Austin Gamey urges government to hold emergency talks with TUC over tariff dispute

Human rights lawyer and policy analyst Austin Gamey has called on the government to initiate emergency talks with the leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) amid a mounting dispute over recent increases in utility tariffs. He described the situation as critical, arguing that soaring costs are placing unsustainable pressure on workers, households and small businesses across Ghana.
Mr. Gamey warned that failure to address the tariff burden could exacerbate socio-economic hardship, particularly for low- and middle-income families already grappling with inflation and rising living costs. He urged the government to convene all stakeholders including consumer groups, union representatives, regulatory bodies and tariff payers to negotiate fair and transparent adjustments.
He also recommended short-term relief measures such as staggered payment plans, subsidy reviews, and targeted support for vulnerable households. In his view, these steps would prevent further deterioration of living standards and protect jobs threatened by economic strain.
Labour union leaders welcomed Gamey’s call, describing it as timely. They argued that tariffs must reflect service efficiency and cost justification rather than indiscriminate burden-shifting. Observers say the dispute underscores broader concerns about governance, utility regulation, and social equity in Ghana’s economic recovery efforts.
As tensions rise, public demand for transparency and fairness grows louder. Many hope the government will respond with meaningful dialogue and policy adjustments that balance economic sustainability with citizen welfare.
