GNFS salvages GH¢35,000 worth of goods after storeroom fire at Mampong-Akuapem

Fire officers from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have salvaged goods valued at approximately GH¢35,000 after a fire broke out in a storeroom at House No. 342 in Mampong-Akuapem on Monday, 8 December 2025. The affected storeroom held items such as disposable cups, takeaway bags, plastic bottles and other packaging materials.

Firefighters, led by ADO I Dicka Carlos Sackitey, arrived at the scene around 10:16 a.m. and quickly deployed water using a Dual Purpose Tender. The blaze was extinguished within an hour. Investigations revealed that the fire started from a wooden chair stored among other belongings before spreading to the ceiling area.

While four wooden chairs, some timber rafters and roofing sheets were destroyed, the swift response by fire officers prevented broader damage. Most inventory and goods in the storeroom were saved from total loss. Authorities have started preliminary investigations to determine the full cause of the fire and advised the public to store flammable materials safely and ensure proper ventilation.

Local residents and the owner of the storeroom expressed relief and gratitude for the prompt action by GNFS. The incident has revived calls for stronger fire-safety oversight, especially for storage facilities holding flammable materials such as plastics and packaging materials. Experts warn that inadequate storage practices can escalate small accidents into large-scale disasters if preventive measures are neglected.

The GNFS has urged citizens to observe fire-safety precautions, including regular checks of electrical wiring, ensuring clear escape paths, and avoiding storing flammable items in poorly ventilated or overcrowded spaces. The service reiterated its call for public awareness and community cooperation to reduce fire risks nationwide.
