Accra mayor leads kerb-painting drive to boost road safety ahead of Christmas

The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has spearheaded a citywide exercise to repaint kerbs along major roads, as the capital prepares for the Christmas season. The initiative is part of efforts to enhance road safety and improve visibility for drivers and pedestrians during the festive period.

Mayor Allotey personally inspected several major routes earlier today, overseeing workers applying fresh white and red paint to kerb edges. He said the exercise is timely because heavy traffic, poor visibility and increased pedestrian movement during the holidays raise the risk of road accidents. The repainting will help demarcate roads more clearly and alert drivers to curbs and walkways.

Officials from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly emphasised that the project is part of a broader push to beautify the city, streamline traffic flow and reduce the dangers associated with shoddy road markings. The citywide effort also includes plans for trash removal, clearing encroachments and improving signage in busy neighbourhoods. Local residents applauded the move, saying clearer road markings and visible kerbs will help reduce accidents, especially at night when visibility is low.

Traders who operate along main roads disclosed that the repainting began early this morning and has attracted attention. Many praised the mayor’s hands-on approach, arguing that this signals commitment to ensuring safety and civic responsibility rather than token gestures. Some also hope the initiative will restore order and discourage illegal dumping along roadsides.

As Accra steps into the festive season, the kerb-painting drive is expected to be followed by a broader public safety campaign involving traffic enforcement, cleanliness patrols and fire safety inspections. The mayor urged citizens to cooperate, avoid obstructing roads and respect public spaces to ensure a safe and harmonious holiday period for all.
