Interior Minister commissions new patrol boats to enhance maritime security

The Interior Minister has officially commissioned four new patrol boats for Ghana’s marine police, a move aimed at reinforcing maritime security along the nation’s coastal and inland waterways. The commissioning ceremony took place at the Tema Harbour where the vessels were handed over to marine law enforcement agencies.

Speaking at the event, the Minister highlighted that the patrol boats are fully equipped with modern navigation and surveillance technology to enable rapid response to incidents including piracy, illegal fishing, smuggling, and environmental infractions. He noted that Ghana’s waterways are critical economic corridors, and safeguarding them is essential for trade, transportation, and national security.

The Minister emphasised that enhancing maritime security is a top priority for the government, given the increasing threats from transnational criminal networks. The newly commissioned boats will significantly increase patrolling capacity, allowing marine police to monitor extensive areas more effectively and respond quickly to security threats.

Officials from the Marine Police Unit explained that the patrol boats will also support community engagement programs and environmental protection initiatives. By conducting regular inspections and surveillance, officers aim to preserve fisheries, prevent illegal dumping, and promote sustainable use of aquatic resources.

The acquisition of these vessels has been welcomed by trade organizations, shipping companies, and local communities who rely on the waterways for their livelihoods. Stakeholders believe the enhanced security presence will boost confidence among investors and traders, reducing losses due to theft, smuggling, and maritime accidents.

The Interior Minister also urged officers to undergo continuous training to maximize the operational efficiency of the new boats. He highlighted that technology alone cannot guarantee security and that disciplined, skilled personnel are essential to achieving operational excellence.

In closing, the Minister expressed optimism that these patrol boats will transform Ghana’s marine policing capabilities, reinforcing safety, economic stability, and environmental stewardship. The government plans to acquire additional vessels in the future as part of its long term maritime security strategy.
