George Weah Urges Fans to Unite Against Racism in Football

Liberian football legend and former president George Weah has made a passionate appeal to football fans worldwide to take an active stand against racism in the sport. Speaking at a two-day FIFA Players’ Voice Panel session held in Rabat, Morocco, Weah emphasized the urgent need for unity, education, and collective action to eliminate racial discrimination from football at every level.

Weah, who remains the only African player to have won the prestigious Ballon d’Or, reflected on his own experiences with racism during his illustrious playing career in Europe. He stressed that racism continues to plague modern football despite decades of awareness campaigns, and called for stronger measures from governing bodies and fans alike.

“Racism has no place in football or anywhere in society,” Weah said. “It’s not enough for players to kneel or for federations to make statements. Every fan, every club, and every governing body must take real action to ensure fairness and equality in the game.”

The FIFA Players’ Voice Panel brought together current and former international players, officials, and representatives of the football community to discuss issues of inclusion, equality, and mental health in the sport. Weah’s remarks sparked wide support across social media, with footballers and anti-racism advocates praising his continued leadership off the pitch.

Weah also applauded FIFA’s recent initiatives aimed at addressing racial abuse in stadiums and on social media platforms. FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently announced new policies that empower referees to suspend or abandon matches when players are racially abused, reinforcing a zero-tolerance stance toward discrimination.

Under the banner “Say No to Racism,” FIFA and several continental football bodies, including CAF and UEFA, are intensifying campaigns to educate young fans and promote inclusivity across clubs and communities.

Weah’s advocacy comes at a time when players such as Vinícius Júnior, Romelu Lukaku, and Samuel Eto’o have spoken out against persistent racist chants and abuse during matches in Europe. His influence, as both a former world-class player and a statesman, continues to shape conversations on ethics, leadership, and equality in global sports.

In his closing remarks, Weah urged fans not to remain silent bystanders. “Football is the people’s game. If the people rise against racism, it will end,” he stated. “It begins with education, empathy, and courage.”

The FIFA Players’ Voice Panel concluded with a call to action encouraging national federations to implement stronger diversity programs and collaborate with social justice organizations to tackle racism and discrimination.
