German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Embark on Three-Day State Visit to Ghana from November 2–4

President of the Federal Republic of Germany, His Excellency Frank-Walter Steinmeier, is scheduled to arrive in Ghana on Sunday, November 2, 2025, for a three-day state visit aimed at deepening the bilateral partnership between the two nations.

Invited by Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama, the visit is a highlight of Germany’s renewed engagement with Africa and will focus especially on trade, investment, technology and development co-operation.

On Monday, November 3, President Steinmeier will receive a full military Guard of Honour on the forecourt of Jubilee House in Accra. A closed-door meeting with President Mahama will follow, during which both leaders will lead their respective delegations into high-level talks. The day’s agenda also includes a State Luncheon at the Presidential Banquet Hall, a visit to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park where the German President will lay a wreath at the tomb of Ghana’s first head of state, and an interactive session with young Ghanaian IT specialists.

On Tuesday, November 4, Steinmeier will travel to Kumasi in Ghana’s Ashanti Region to perform a sod-cutting ceremony at the Kumasi Technical Institute. He will also visit the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for engagements with staff, alumni and students. His Kumasi itinerary further includes a tour of the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research and a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace.

The visit underscores the evolving nature of Ghana-Germany relations, with particular emphasis on innovation, capacity building, and stronger private-sector collaboration. Beyond diplomatic symbolism, both countries are expected to discuss concrete frameworks for German investment in Ghana’s technology, manufacturing and vocational training sectors.

Germany sees Ghana as a strategic partner in West Africa. This visit comes amid an era of intensified German engagement across Africa, seeking to broaden ties beyond traditional development aid to include trade, entrepreneurship and technological innovation. Ghana’s selection as a host reflects its stable democratic environment and growing economy.

For Ghana, hosting President Steinmeier presents opportunities to elevate its global profile, attract foreign direct investment and harness German expertise in sectors such as renewable energy, vocational education and digitalisation. Ghanaian officials have indicated that the visit aligns with the country’s long-term development plans and efforts to diversify international partnerships.

Security and logistics arrangements for the state visit are already in motion, with Ghanaian authorities coordinating closely with diplomatic and local stakeholders to ensure smooth execution of the ceremonial and business components. The presence of both government and private-sector delegations from Germany suggests that outcomes may include memoranda of understanding, investment pledges and renewed educational exchange programmes.

While detailed outcomes will depend on the discussions, analysts anticipate several key announcements. These may include new German-Ghanaian joint ventures, support for Ghana’s tech start-up ecosystem, expanded vocational training initiatives, and collaboration on research and development, particularly in tertiary institutions like KNUST and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research.

The three-day timeframe of the visit is compact but carefully structured to cover both political and regional dimensions of the Ghana-Germany partnership. From Accra’s national politics to Kumasi’s regional significance and outreach to academia and innovation hubs, the itinerary reflects a holistic approach.

President Steinmeier’s tour of Ghana also follows engagements in other African countries, signalling Germany’s broader strategic focus in the continent. His presence in Ghana opens a window for enhanced diplomatic momentum and serves as a reminder of the importance of strong public-private linkages in modern international relations.
