Real Madrid asserted their dominance at the top of La Liga with a narrow yet decisive 2-1 victory over archrivals Barcelona in a high-intensity El Clásico clash at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday night. The result pushed Los Blancos five points clear at the summit, reaffirming their position as title favourites.

The encounter began with fireworks as Madrid earned a penalty in the fourth minute following Lamine Yamal’s reckless challenge on Vinicius Junior. However, after a lengthy VAR check, the referee overturned the decision, offering Barcelona an early reprieve.

Kylian Mbappé appeared to have given Madrid the lead with a spectacular volley in the 12th minute, only for it to be ruled offside. But the French superstar eventually found his mark in the 22nd minute, finishing off a sublime pass from Jude Bellingham with trademark precision to put Madrid ahead.

Barcelona fought back with intent and rhythm, gradually asserting control in midfield. Their persistence paid off in the 38th minute when Pedri slipped a deft pass into Marcus Rashford, whose low cross was converted by Fermin Lopez to level the score.

Madrid, however, responded almost immediately. Just before the interval, Vinicius Jr whipped in a dangerous cross from the left, which Eder Militao nodded across goal for Bellingham to tap home, restoring Madrid’s lead.

The second half saw more drama as Madrid were awarded another penalty after Eric Garcia handled the ball inside the box. Mbappé stepped up confidently but was denied by an outstanding save from Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny, who dived full stretch to keep his team in contention.

Despite a few anxious moments, Real Madrid maintained composure and controlled much of the second period, with Bellingham once again finding the back of the net late on, only for the assistant referee’s flag to cut celebrations short due to an offside in the buildup.

Barcelona’s frustrations peaked in stoppage time when Pedri was shown a second yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Aurelien Tchouameni, leaving the visitors a man down.
