Accra Hearts of Oak Demand GHS200000 for Defamation

Ghanaian football giants Accra Hearts of Oak SC have initiated legal proceedings against a sports journalist and a television station, seeking GH¢200,000 in damages for alleged defamation.

According to court filings, the club claims that the journalist made false and malicious statements during a sports talk programme broadcast on the TV station earlier this year. Hearts argue that the remarks — which allegedly questioned the club’s management practices and financial transparency — have damaged the team’s reputation, brand image, and public trust.

The suit, lodged at the Accra High Court, names both the journalist and the media house as co-defendants. The Phobians are demanding:

  • GH¢200,000 in compensation for reputational harm
  • A public retraction of the statements
  • An unqualified apology to be aired on the same programme and published in two national newspapers
  • An injunction preventing the defendants from making further defamatory comments against the club

A spokesperson for Hearts of Oak stated, “The club has always welcomed constructive criticism, but outright falsehoods will not be tolerated. This legal action is to protect our name, our supporters, and the integrity of Ghanaian football.”

Neither the journalist nor the TV station has issued a formal public response at this time. Legal analysts note that the case could set a precedent for defamation disputes involving sports personalities and media outlets in Ghana.
