Students Return Under Tight Security to Write WASSCE
Bawku Senior High School (SHS) has officially reopened its doors to final-year students after a two-week closure triggered by a violent attack that resulted in the tragic death of a student. The reopening comes just in time for the students to sit for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
On Tuesday, August 5, the school resumed academic activities with the successful commencement of the Visual Arts practical examination. Authorities ensured that all necessary security and psychological support systems were in place to help students transition back to learning after the traumatic event.
Heightened Security and Support for Returning Students
The reopening followed an intensive security assessment and collaboration between the Ghana Education Service, the Ghana Police Service, and the Bawku Municipal Security Council. Armed personnel have been deployed to protect students, staff, and examination materials throughout the examination period.
Parents, teachers, and education stakeholders have praised the swift response by the government and local authorities, while also expressing concern over the rising insecurity in parts of the Upper East Region.
Psychological support services are being provided to both staff and students to help them cope with the trauma of the attack. The Ghana Education Service has reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and well-being of all students.
The incident shows ongoing security challenges in the Bawku enclave, a region that has seen recurrent violence in recent years. Despite the tense atmosphere, school authorities remain optimistic that students will be able to complete their examinations without further disruption.
