Minority Stages Walkout from Parliament Before Mid-Year Budget Review Over Alleged Electoral Violence in Ablekuma North Rerun

The Minority Caucus in Parliament staged a dramatic walkout on Thursday, boycotting the presentation of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review in protest against what they described as widespread violence and abuse of state power during the recent Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

The walkout occurred moments before the Finance Minister began delivering the budget statement, with Minority Members of Parliament filing out of the chamber in protest. Their action was a direct response to what they claim was a deeply flawed electoral process, marred by voter intimidation, acts of violence, and misuse of security forces.

Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, said the decision to stage the walkout was driven by principle.

“We cannot in good conscience sit through the Mid-Year Budget Review while staying silent about the grave assault on Ghana’s democratic values,” he declared.

The move sparked a fiery reaction from the Majority side of the House. Some MPs from the ruling side jeered and hooted as their colleagues in the Minority exited, dismissing the protest as political theatrics.

The Minority, however, maintains that its action is a defense of democracy, calling on civil society, religious leaders, and international observers to take note of the deepening concerns around electoral integrity in Ghana.

The Ablekuma North rerun has become a national flashpoint following claims of violence and irregularities, further polarizing political debate and casting a shadow over the newly sworn-in MP for the area.

As the political standoff intensifies, many Ghanaians are watching closely to see whether this incident will prompt a broader investigation or reforms to protect the sanctity of future elections.
