Former Member of Parliament Akua Afriyieh has issued a public apology to the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for contesting the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run against the party’s directive. Her decision to run independently in the closely watched election on July 11, 2025, sparked internal backlash after she defied explicit instructions from the party hierarchy.

The re-run was held after the Electoral Commission nullified the results in 19 polling stations over irregularities during the December 2024 general elections. Akua Afriyieh, a former legislator for the constituency, broke ranks with the NPP by filing her nomination to participate in the race, despite warnings of disciplinary consequences.

‘I Regret My Actions,’ Says Former MP

In a statement released on Sunday, Afriyieh expressed deep regret over her actions and acknowledged the damage caused to party unity. “I offer my unqualified apology to the National Executive Committee, Greater Accra Regional executives, and all party members for my decision to run in the re-election without the party’s blessing,” she wrote.

She added that her decision stemmed from a desire to serve her constituents, but admitted that her approach was misguided. “My commitment to the NPP remains unshaken, and I pledge to support the party’s efforts to heal and move forward,” she said.

Party insiders say disciplinary measures are still under discussion, even as Afriyieh’s apology is being considered. The NPP is currently re-evaluating its strategy in the Ablekuma North constituency following its loss in the re-run to NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn, marking a historic victory for the opposition.
