High Court Dismisses NPP’s Bid to Halt Ablekuma North Polls Rerun

An Accra High Court has dismissed an interim injunction filed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) seeking to prevent the Electoral Commission (EC) from conducting a rerun in 19 out of 281 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.
The court’s decision clears the way for the EC to proceed with its plans to rerun elections in the affected polling stations, following disputes over irregularities in the December 2024 parliamentary elections.
The NPP, which opposed the EC’s move, argued that the planned rerun was unjustified and sought the court’s intervention to halt the process. However, in its ruling, the court found no sufficient grounds to grant the injunction, stressing that the EC must be allowed to execute its constitutional mandate without undue interference.
Background to the Dispute

The decision to rerun elections in the 19 polling stations was met with stiff opposition from the NPP, which viewed the move as politically motivated. However, the Electoral Commission maintained that the rerun was necessary to ensure transparency and credibility in the final outcome.
Meanwhile, legal and political analysts say the court’s ruling reinforces the independence of the Electoral Commission and underscores the importance of upholding democratic processes, even amid political tension.
