Mexico beat the USA 2-1 to successfully defend their CONCACAF Gold Cup title in a dramatic final held in Houston, Texas, overcoming an early setback to secure a record-extending 10th championship.

Pochettino’s Early Lead Not Enough

Former Tottenham and Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, now head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team, saw his side take a fourth-minute lead through Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards. Richards powered a header off Sebastian Berhalter’s pinpoint free-kick, with the ball ricocheting off the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line.

However, Mexico responded swiftly. In the 27th minute, Fulham’s Raul Jimenez scored a stunning equalizer with a first-time finish into the roof of the net, following an incisive reverse pass from Marcel Ruiz.

Jimenez honored his former Wolves teammate Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car accident days earlier, by holding up a shirt with “Diogo J 20” and sitting on the pitch in tribute.

Alvarez Seals Victory for El Tri

Mexico dominated the second half and found the winner in the 77th minute through West Ham’s Edson Alvarez. His diving header initially faced an offside flag, but a VAR review overturned the decision, confirming Alvarez was onside.

With 60% possession and a staggering 12-0 corner advantage, Mexico controlled the tempo. They fired 16 shots, with 8 on target, compared to just 3 on target from the U.S.

American goalkeeper Matt Freese made six crucial saves, keeping his side in the match until the decisive goal.

What Made This Final Special?

Despite the loss, this tournament marked a resurgence for the U.S., who had previously suffered four consecutive home defeats earlier in the year. Under Pochettino, they showed marked improvement with wins over Trinidad and Tobago, Saudi Arabia, Haiti, Costa Rica, and Guatemala en route to the final.

The Gold Cup final underscored Mexico’s dominance in the region and their ability to recover under pressure—proving why they remain the most decorated side in the competition’s history.
