FDA Issues Public Alert on 2 Alcoholic Drinks Containing Marijuana Extracts

Kings Orange Liqueur and Jupiter 1990 Declared Unsafe
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a strong public warning against the consumption of two alcoholic beverages—Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur and Jupiter 1990—after routine laboratory tests revealed the presence of marijuana (cannabis) extracts in both products.
In an official statement released on Monday, the FDA said that the two products, which are currently circulating in the Ghanaian market, pose significant health risks to unsuspecting consumers, especially children and persons with certain health conditions.
Public Health Risk and Recall Order
According to the FDA, the active ingredients in cannabis can affect brain function, alter mood, and impair judgment. The unauthorised infusion of such substances into food or drinks violates Ghana’s Public Health Act (Act 851) and poses legal as well as safety concerns.
“These products were not approved by the Authority and contain substances that can be harmful when consumed without knowledge or supervision,” the statement said.

The FDA has ordered an immediate withdrawal of Kings Orange Flavoured Liqueur and Jupiter 1990 from shelves and urged the public to report sightings of these drinks in shops or bars to the Authority via their official hotline or WhatsApp number.
Consumers experiencing side effects after consuming these products have been advised to seek immediate medical attention.
