The Minority in Parliament has formally petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to investigate a recent incident involving Sammy Gyamfi, Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board. This follows a viral video showing Gyamfi handing bundles of U.S. dollars to evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, from his luxury vehicle.

Private Citizen’s Petition Sparks Public Concern

The incident, which occurred on May 10, 2025, has sparked public concern over potential corruption and abuse of office. In response, a private citizen, Eric Dumenu Akatsi, initially filed a petition with CHRAJ, citing Article 218(e) of the 1992 Constitution, which empowers the commission to investigate alleged corruption and abuse of power by public officials. Akatsi’s petition highlighted the dollar-splashing act as a clear indication of unexplained wealth and alleged that Gyamfi maintains two private bank accounts with substantial deposits exceeding GHS 100 million.

However, Akatsi later withdrew his petition, citing personal safety concerns after receiving threats. Despite this, the Minority has taken up the matter, urging the relevant state institutions to conduct a thorough investigation into the source of Gyamfi’s wealth and the circumstances surrounding the dollar-gifting incident.

Presidency Reacts, Minority Demands Deeper Probe

The Presidency has responded by cautioning Gyamfi, with Chief of Staff Julius Debrah issuing a formal warning. Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated that, following Gyamfi’s apology, the Presidency considers the matter resolved and does not anticipate further action.

The Minority’s petition underscores the importance of accountability and transparency in public office, calling on CHRAJ, the OSP, and the CID to uphold their mandates in investigating potential misconduct.
