Founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has launched a scathing critique against former Vice President and 2024 NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, claiming he lacks the leadership strength to steer the party into the 2028 elections.
Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues on Sunday, May 4, 2025, Dr. Tamakloe asserted that Dr. Bawumia has failed to demonstrate the boldness and independence necessary to take decisive, politically unencumbered action to rescue Ghana’s struggling economy. He referenced his soon-to-be-released book, A Nation Into Retirement: A Narrative of a Statesman, to substantiate his concerns.
“The mess in which we find ourselves requires leadership that can make decisive decisions without any undue interference, and I doubt Dr. Bawumia has that temerity as a leader,” Dr. Tamakloe declared.
With Ghana battling ballooning debt, rising unemployment, and waning public trust, Dr. Tamakloe emphasized that the times demand “bold, decisive leadership” — qualities he believes Dr. Bawumia has yet to exhibit. He pointed to Bawumia’s track record as head of the Economic Management Team, saying it lacked signs of independent-mindedness and resolve.
“Our challenges cannot be addressed by a leader who is constantly looking over his shoulder for approval from power brokers,” Tamakloe charged. “While Dr. Bawumia is undoubtedly intelligent and technically skilled, technocratic knowledge alone does not equal effective political leadership.”
Dr. Tamakloe also criticized Bawumia’s failure to resign over the unpopular E-Levy policy, asserting, “If it were me, I would have resigned.”
Looking ahead, the veteran politician called for sweeping reforms within the NPP. He proposed that the party’s current national executives step down to make way for an Interim Management Committee that will conduct clean, transparent internal elections free from financial manipulation.
“Those who led us into opposition should have resigned on their own. We need a clean election devoid of monetary influence to elect the right people to lead the NPP,” he concluded.
