National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has praised President John Dramani Mahama for what he describes as a bold and constitutional decision to suspend Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

In a social media post on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, Sammy Gyamfi expressed gratitude to the president for upholding the rule of law and acting on the advice of the Council of State.

“Thank you Mr. President @JDMahama for your courage. Your suspension of the Chief Justice in accordance with the advice of the Council of State is a testament of your fidelity to the Constitution and the rule of law,” he wrote.

Background to the Suspension

President Mahama’s action follows the establishment of a prima facie case against the Chief Justice based on three distinct petitions. In accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, a five-member committee chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang has been constituted to investigate the allegations.

The suspension is to allow the committee to conduct its work without interference and is effective immediately.

Public and Political Reactions

The announcement has triggered a mix of reactions across political circles and civil society. While many supporters of the NDC have hailed the move as timely and necessary, others—including opposition figures—have questioned the motivation behind the suspension.

Notably, NPP member Akosua Manu has raised concerns about the timing and potential political underpinnings of the decision.

Contrasting Political Narratives

Sammy Gyamfi’s statement offers a contrasting narrative, framing the suspension as a courageous demonstration of constitutional leadership. His endorsement reinforces the NDC’s stance on judicial accountability and respect for due process.

The varied reactions indicate deepening political divides over how constitutional tools are being deployed in the country’s governance.

A Turning Point for Judicial Accountability?

As the investigative process unfolds, the suspension marks a significant moment for Ghana’s judiciary and governance. It raises important questions about how the country holds top officials accountable, even within the highest echelons of the judiciary.

Observers will closely follow the work of the investigative committee and how this decision shapes future interactions between the executive and the judiciary.

Conclusion

President Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s political landscape. While supporters view it as a principled stand, critics remain skeptical. Either way, it underscores the delicate balance of power and the ongoing struggle to strengthen democratic institutions.
