During a crackdown on illegal mining, Ghanaian security forces have arrested 47 individuals and seized 17 excavators along with a cache of weapons during a coordinated anti-galamsey operation in the Samreboi area.
Operation Details
The 12-hour operation, commencing at 5:00 AM, was a joint effort between the Ghana Police Service and the Forestry Commission. It targeted six illegal mining sites, some reportedly linked to Akonta Mining, a company associated with Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Among those arrested were six Chinese nationals, two Koreans, and eighteen Ghanaians. Authorities also impounded eight excavators, with five additional machines abandoned at the sites due to mobility issues. The operation led to the seizure of two Toyota Hilux pick-up vehicles, a Toyota RAV4, four motorbikes, and various mining equipment.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, commended the operation, emphasizing the government’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining activities that threaten the nation’s environment and water bodies.
