Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr. Richard Agyemang Boadi, has refused to apologize to Ghanaians over recent comments threatening to flog traders who sell in unauthorized areas.
The mayor’s remarks, which sparked widespread backlash on social media, were made during a public address concerning street trading at major markets in the Ashanti Regional capital.
Mayor Threatens Action Against Street Trading
Mr. Boadi, who has been cracking down on what he describes as lawlessness in the city, boldly stated that he would “deal with traders” who sell in the middle of the street, specifically targeting the busy trading hubs of Kejetia and Adum.
He warned that his administration would not tolerate activities that disrupt order in the central business district. According to him, traders operating in unauthorized zones would face consequences, including physical punishment.
“I’ll personally ensure that anyone selling in the streets is disciplined. We’ll not tolerate this,” the mayor had declared.
Backlash and Calls for Apology
The statement immediately went viral, with civil society groups and concerned citizens condemning the mayor for his aggressive tone and threats of physical assault. Many took to social media to demand an apology and a more humane approach to enforcement.
No Apology Forthcoming
However, in a recent interview on Angel FM, monitored by GH Page, Mr. Boadi remained defiant. He clarified that he had no intention of carrying out floggings but emphasized that his core message remains unchanged.
“Apologizing to Ghanaians will be the last thing I’ll ever do. There’s no sense in that,” he said.
He stressed that while his words may have been harsh, the issue of street trading must be dealt with decisively for the good of Kumasi.
A Focus on Order Over Optics
Despite the public criticism, Mr. Boadi has doubled down on his commitment to clearing street vendors from unauthorized locations. He maintains that ensuring order in the city is his top priority and insists his administration will enforce the law — even if unpopular.
