BREAKING: Majority leader Mahama Ayariga Bawku’s residence set ablaze

Fresh unrest has gripped Bawku in Ghana’s Upper East Region, where the residence of Majority Leader and MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has reportedly been set ablaze. The attack follows an escalation of violence that erupted on April 9, 2025, leaving one person dead and multiple properties destroyed, including those belonging to police personnel.

Police Commander’s Residence Targeted After Mahama Ayariga’s
The private residence of ACP Adamu Seidu, the Bawku Divisional Police Commander, was also burned down by unidentified assailants. The attack on his home appears to be a retaliatory response to a deadly confrontation between youth factions and the police earlier that day.

Gunfire Erupts at Local Market
Tensions reportedly spiked after members of one faction demanded that women from a rival group vacate the local market. The situation quickly escalated, prompting a police intervention. However, an exchange of gunfire ensued when some youth allegedly opened fire on the officers. One civilian was killed, and two others sustained serious injuries during the chaos.
Retaliation and Arson Attacks
In the aftermath of the shooting, angry mobs retaliated by setting fire to several homes, including the residence of ACP Seidu and houses belonging to other police officers. A police vehicle was also torched, and a barracks was attacked, forcing the evacuation of police personnel from the premises.

Escalation Linked to Chieftaincy Conflict
The violence is believed to stem from the resurgence of a long-standing chieftaincy dispute, intensified by the recent return of rival chief Alhaji Seidu Abagre from exile. Abagre had fled Bawku after an arrest warrant was issued against him for his contested installation in Nalerigu. However, a Kumasi High Court ruling on October 17, 2024, nullified the warrant, clearing the way for his return.
Government Response and Security Measures
Security agencies have increased their presence in the area in an effort to restore calm. Despite these efforts, tension remains high, and residents fear further violence.
In a statement released prior to the arson attack on his home, Mahama Ayariga condemned the violence and called for peace. Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama, who was recently sworn into office, had embarked on a peace mission to Bawku. However, the o
