Former Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has called on political leaders to abandon “flash and burn” politics and embrace bipartisan collaboration for the sake of Ghana’s national development.
Criticism Shouldn’t Be for Political Points
Speaking at a TEKTALK event hosted by the KNUST SRC, Dr. Adutwum condemned the practice of rejecting good ideas simply because they come from the opposing side. He noted that some opposition figures criticize government initiatives not because they are ineffective, but to score political points.
“Sometimes, your opponents know what you’re doing is right, but they may say it’s bad in order to score political points,” he said, citing the E-block project as an example of a good policy that needs thoughtful adaptation, not blanket rejection.
Dr. Adutwum Calls for Bipartisan Representation in National Commissions
Dr. Adutwum proposed that critical national commissions in the future adopt bipartisan representation, suggesting that if the ruling party selects three members, the opposition should select two.
“Let’s look at how we can do bipartisan representation,” he stated, advocating for shared responsibility in shaping Ghana’s future.
Politics Can Be a Force for Good
Reflecting on his political journey, the MP highlighted how he has sponsored over 150 students in his constituency to pursue careers in engineering and medicine. He also touted his contribution to promoting STEM education in Ghana.
“Politics can be a force for good for national transformation,” he said.
Entertainment and Politics: The Interconnected Role
Also speaking at the event, Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu, Founder and CEO of 3Music Network, emphasized that politics is the foundation for economic growth and transformation.
“Politics sets the tone and avenue for national transformation… everything else can be built on it, including finance,” he said.
The TEKTALK event was held under the theme: “Pioneering National Transformation through Politics, Finance, and Entertainment.”
