The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has assured residents of Accra and its surrounding areas that efforts are underway to restore power after a heavy rainstorm caused widespread outages on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

In a public notice issued shortly after the storm, ECG confirmed that several areas experienced power cuts due to damage caused by the severe weather. The company emphasized that its technical teams are working diligently to identify faults and restore electricity as quickly as possible.

“The heavy rainstorm that hit Accra and its environs this evening has caused some outages within our network. ECG wishes to assure all affected customers that our engineers are working assiduously to repair the faults and restore power supply. The inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” the statement said.

The storm, which began in the late afternoon, brought intense rainfall that led to significant flooding across parts of the capital. One of the worst-hit areas was the stretch of the N1 Highway near the Ofankor Barrier, where heavy flooding caused massive traffic congestion and brought vehicular movement to a near standstill.

Commuters were left stranded as water levels rose quickly, submerging portions of the road. Pedestrians struggled to find safe passage, while motorists attempted to navigate the waterlogged highways. In some cases, drivers were seen reversing their vehicles near the Neoplan Station in a bid to avoid getting stuck, opting instead to divert through alternative routes such as Taifa and nearby communities.

However, not all were able to escape the flooding. Several vehicles were reported to be completely submerged, with images and videos circulating on social media showing stranded passengers and flooded cars.

Other parts of the city, including Shiashie, also experienced severe flooding. Streets, homes, and businesses in these areas were inundated, once again highlighting Accra’s persistent challenges with poor drainage infrastructure and flood management.

As cleanup efforts begin and power restoration continues, residents are being urged to remain cautious and report any damaged electrical installations or fallen cables to ECG for prompt response.

Authorities are expected to assess the damage caused by the storm and explore long-term solutions to mitigate future flooding and infrastructure disruption in the capital.
