Dampare’s removal: Mahama needed someone who is loyal to him – Joyce Bawa

Legal practitioner and aide to President John Mahama, Joyce Bawa Mogtari, has justified the government’s decision to replace George Akuffo Dampare as Inspector General of Police (IGP) with Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

On March 13, 2025, the government announced Yohuno’s appointment in a statement, emphasizing that he is expected to lead efforts to modernize policing in Ghana.

CSOs Challenge Removal of Security Heads

Before Yohuno’s appointment, some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) attempted to block the government’s move by seeking a Supreme Court injunction to prevent the president from dismissing security agency heads.

Bawa Mogtari’s Response to Critics

Reacting to the CSOs’ legal action, Joyce Bawa Mogtari argued that President Mahama has every right to appoint a loyal IGP, especially in matters concerning national security.

“They sat aloof and watched askance as our country was mismanaged, and looked on as former President Akufo-Addo made reckless financial decisions and just as many frivolous appointments. Now they run to the Supreme Court to stop President Mahama from sacking IGP Dampare,” she stated.

She further emphasized:
“It is trite learning that leaders have to appoint persons loyal to them, especially when it comes to the safety and security of the country.”

Political Reactions and Security Concerns

The removal of Dampare and appointment of Yohuno have sparked political debate, with some arguing it reflects partisan control over the police force, while others believe it is a necessary move for effective governance.

As discussions continue, all eyes are on IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno to see how he will handle his new role and police reforms.
