Spain’s media are buzzing with anticipation as their national team gears up to face England in the Euro 2024 final this Sunday, believing they have a “score to settle” with Cole Palmer.

Gareth Southgate’s side clinched a dramatic 2-1 victory against the Netherlands on Wednesday, securing their spot in the European Championship final for the second consecutive tournament. Spain also earned their place with a comeback 2-1 win over France on Tuesday night.

This highly-anticipated final between England and Spain echoes the UEFA European Under-21 Championship final last summer. Palmer’s deflected free-kick secured a narrow 1-0 win for England, earning them their first Under-21 trophy since 1984.

However, the match is remembered for more than just the goal. Palmer’s provocative celebration in front of Spain’s dugout sparked a massive brawl. Spain’s players and coaching staff were infuriated, rushing towards Palmer to express their anger. The altercation resulted in the ejections of England coach Ashley Cole and Spain’s fitness coach Carlos Rivera.

While only Alex Baena from Spain’s Under-21 squad is present at Euro 2024, Spanish radio station Cadena COPE has not forgotten Palmer’s controversial actions, suggesting Spain has unfinished business with the England midfielder.

Palmer’s celebration even riled his Manchester City teammate Sergio Gomez, who played for Spain in the Under-21 final. Gomez criticized Palmer’s conduct, calling it disrespectful and indicative of English provocations.

Reflecting on his celebration, Palmer acknowledged it might have been excessive but justified it by expressing frustration with Spain’s tactics during the match. Despite not starting any games for England at Euro 2024, Palmer has impressed in his substitute appearances, contributing to England’s strong performance as the tournament progressed.

As England and Spain prepare for this monumental clash, Palmer highlighted the significance of the match, recalling the intensity of their Under-21 final. The stage is set for a thrilling encounter, with both teams eager to claim European glory.
