3 Dead, Over 70 Injured in Stadium Tragedy After MC Alger Title Victory
A devastating incident marred celebrations in Algeria following MC Alger’s league title win, as a stadium barrier collapse claimed three lives and left over 70 people injured, according to a statement by Algeria’s Ministry of Health.
The accident occurred moments after MC Alger secured their second consecutive top-flight title, triggering jubilant scenes at the stadium. But the festive mood turned tragic when a railing in the upper stands gave way, sending scores of fans plunging into the lower tiers of the stadium.
Victims Rushed to Hospitals as Nation Mourns
Emergency medical teams responded swiftly, transporting injured spectators to nearby medical centres. Official reports indicate that Beni Messous University Hospital received 38 patients, Ben Aknoun Hospital treated 27, and Bab El Oued Hospital admitted 16. Three fatalities were confirmed, with dozens sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
Among the deceased was Younes Amguzzi, whose death was acknowledged in a heartfelt Instagram post by MC Alger:
“It is with great sadness and sorrow that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands.”
The club has not officially addressed the other two reported fatalities.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and extended well-wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured.
Footage aired by local broadcaster El Heddaf TV captured the harrowing moment the railing collapsed, sparking concern about stadium infrastructure and crowd safety. In the aftermath, MC Alger players and staff visited victims and even took part in blood donation drives to support those affected.
As a mark of respect, the trophy presentation ceremony was postponed, while authorities are yet to release an official statement on the cause of the collapse or future safety protocols.
