Newcastle United were left heartbroken after conceding a dramatic stoppage time penalty that allowed FC Barcelona to escape with a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash at St James’ Park.

In what was a historic European night for Newcastle, the Premier League side delivered a spirited performance and appeared on course for a famous victory before teenage star Lamine Yamal converted a penalty with the final kick of the game to salvage a draw for the Spanish giants.

Newcastle dominate early stages

The match marked Newcastle’s first Champions League knockout appearance in many years, and the home side responded with an energetic and aggressive performance in front of a passionate crowd.

Manager Eddie Howe set up his team to press Barcelona high up the pitch, forcing mistakes and creating several opportunities. Newcastle produced more attacking intent, registering more shots and corners while keeping Barcelona under sustained pressure for long periods of the game.

Barcelona, coached by Hansi Flick, struggled to establish their usual rhythm in possession and found it difficult to break through Newcastle’s well organised defensive line. Despite the Catalan side controlling slightly more possession, clear chances were limited as Newcastle’s defence repeatedly disrupted their attacking moves.

Barnes breaks the deadlock

After a tense and largely goalless contest, Newcastle finally found their breakthrough in the 86th minute. Winger Harvey Barnes finished off a well worked move, converting a cross from Jacob Murphy to send the home supporters into celebration.

The goal appeared to secure a famous European win for the Magpies, who had dominated significant stretches of the match and looked the more dangerous side going forward.

For a few minutes, the atmosphere inside St James’ Park suggested Newcastle had taken a crucial advantage ahead of the second leg in Spain.

Dramatic late twist

However, Barcelona struck back in dramatic fashion deep into stoppage time.

In the dying moments, Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo drew a foul inside the penalty area after a clever attacking move, giving the visitors one final opportunity to rescue the match.

Young star Lamine Yamal stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty into the bottom corner, scoring with virtually the last kick of the game and silencing the home crowd.

The late equaliser ensured Barcelona returned to Spain with a valuable away result despite being second best for much of the contest.

Newcastle left to regret missed chances

The result will feel particularly painful for Newcastle, who created several opportunities throughout the game and defended strongly for most of the night.

Their intensity, physical play and pressing disrupted Barcelona’s rhythm and forced the Spanish side to spend long periods defending.

Yet the inability to extend their lead before the final whistle ultimately proved costly, as a single moment of defensive lapse allowed Barcelona to level the tie.

All to play for in second leg

With the first leg ending 1-1, the tie remains finely balanced heading into the decisive second leg at Camp Nou.

Barcelona will have the advantage of playing at home, while Newcastle will still believe they can cause an upset after demonstrating they can compete with one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Newcastle's head coach Eddie Howe

For Eddie Howe’s side, the challenge now is to recover from the late disappointment and reproduce the same intensity when they travel to Spain for the return fixture.

Despite the heartbreak, Newcastle’s performance showed they are capable of challenging Europe’s elite, setting up what promises to be a thrilling second leg in the battle for a place in the Champions League quarter finals.
