A large-scale Russian aerial assault involving drones and missiles struck several Ukrainian cities, including Kharkiv, killing at least 10 people and injuring many others in one of the deadliest recent attacks on the northeastern city. The strike targeted residential areas and critical infrastructure, intensifying the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Missile strike on residential building
According to Ukrainian officials, one of the most devastating strikes occurred when a Russian missile hit a five storey residential apartment building in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city. The attack killed at least 10 civilians, including two children, while several others were injured and trapped under rubble. Emergency responders worked through the night to rescue survivors and search for victims buried beneath the debris.
Local authorities reported that more than a dozen people were wounded in the blast. The missile strike caused significant damage to nearby homes and infrastructure, leaving sections of the building collapsed and triggering fires in surrounding areas.
Among the victims were members of the same families, including a schoolteacher and her young son as well as a teenage girl and her mother. Ukrainian officials described the attack as a direct hit on a civilian residential block.
Massive drone and missile barrage
The Kharkiv strike formed part of a wider overnight assault across Ukraine. Ukrainian military authorities reported that Russia launched hundreds of aerial weapons, including approximately 480 drones and 29 missiles targeting multiple regions of the country.
Ukraine’s air defense systems managed to intercept many of the incoming weapons. Officials said Ukrainian forces shot down more than 450 drones and nearly 20 missiles during the attack. However, several missiles and drones managed to penetrate air defenses and hit at least 22 targets across the country.
In addition to Kharkiv, strikes were reported in Kyiv, Odesa and other regions, where energy infrastructure, railways and port facilities were damaged. In some areas the attacks disrupted heating systems and electricity supplies, forcing emergency power outages in several regions.
Ukraine condemns attacks on civilians
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemned the strikes, describing them as deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure. He called on Ukraine’s international partners to provide additional air defense systems and military support to protect the country from further aerial assaults.
Zelenskyy has repeatedly warned that Russia continues to target civilian buildings and critical services as part of its broader military campaign. Ukrainian authorities argue that such attacks are intended to weaken public morale and disrupt everyday life across the country.
Russia’s position
Russian officials, however, maintain that their strikes are aimed at military and energy facilities linked to Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Moscow has frequently denied intentionally targeting civilians, arguing that damage to residential areas occurs when Ukrainian air defenses intercept incoming missiles or when military targets are located near populated zones.
Despite these claims, Ukrainian authorities and Western governments say repeated attacks on residential buildings and public infrastructure suggest a pattern of strikes that endanger civilian populations.
Kharkiv remains a frequent target
Kharkiv, located near the Russian border, has been repeatedly targeted throughout the war due to its strategic location and large population. Since Russia’s full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the city has experienced numerous missile, drone and artillery strikes that have damaged homes, schools and industrial facilities.
Previous attacks on the city have killed dozens of civilians and destroyed large sections of residential neighborhoods, highlighting the vulnerability of urban centers close to the frontlines of the conflict.

The latest strikes demonstrate the continuing intensity of the war, which has entered its fourth year with no clear resolution in sight. Both sides have intensified long range attacks using missiles, drones and artillery, targeting military positions as well as critical infrastructure.
As rescue teams in Kharkiv continue to search the rubble for survivors, Ukrainian officials warn that further attacks remain likely, particularly as Russia expands the use of drones and precision missiles in its ongoing campaign.
