The Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Rashid Pelpuo, has underscored the vital contribution of private sector sanitation firms, particularly Zoomlion Ghana Limited, in supporting the government’s ambitious 24-hour economy policy. Speaking during a working visit to the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, the Minister described Zoomlion as a model organisation that exemplifies how private enterprises can help stimulate employment, improve productivity and contribute to national development.

The visit formed part of the government’s comprehensive reset agenda, which aims to strengthen labour conditions, enhance worker welfare, and encourage private sector participation in Ghana’s economic transformation. During his tour of the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant, Dr. Pelpuo familiarised himself with the plant’s operations, expansion plans, and broader contribution to the economy.

According to Dr. Pelpuo, the working visit was designed to deepen government understanding of the occupational hazards within the waste management sector and to examine the welfare of workers employed in such environments. He also noted the challenges private operators face in accessing government incentives and institutional support. “We are keen to understand how this work affects the working population,” he said. “We want to assess occupational hazards, the welfare of workers, and the operational challenges businesses face. Government remains committed to supporting private enterprises to grow and create sustainable jobs.”

The Minister further stressed that waste management companies play an important role not only in maintaining public health but also in creating large-scale employment opportunities. In elaborating on the government’s proposed 24-hour economy policy, Dr. Pelpuo indicated that firms capable of sustaining continuous operations would be given strategic attention and support. “The government is committed to creating value and supporting private businesses, especially under the 24-hour economy framework. Zoomlion is a strong example of the type of organisation we are looking to support, and this visit helps us better appreciate the scale of their work,” he explained.

He emphasized that initiatives designed to prioritise worker safety, environmental sustainability, and employment generation align directly with the government’s economic transformation agenda. “We are not pushing people to rush into waste management, but we will provide incentives for those willing to invest in the sector. Zoomlion is doing remarkable work and has enormous potential,” Dr. Pelpuo added.

The Minister also revealed that Zoomlion’s nationwide presence through numerous subsidiaries and operational facilities has had a notable impact on youth employment. According to him, approximately 200,000 Ghanaians have benefited from opportunities created along the sanitation value chain. He highlighted that facilities such as the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant would stand to benefit significantly from policies aimed at boosting productivity through round-the-clock operations. “We are pursuing a reset agenda while supporting the 24-hour economy to function effectively. Organisations such as Zoomlion represent areas where government support can have a significant national impact,” he stated.

In response, the Chief Operating Officer of the Environment and Sanitation Cluster of the Jospong Group of Companies, Mrs. Florence Larbi, spoke about Zoomlion’s evolution over the past two decades. She explained that the company has expanded far beyond basic waste collection to become a comprehensive waste value-chain operator, offering services across collection, storage, transfer, recycling and treatment. She noted that with 36 waste treatment facilities across Ghana, including medical, liquid and solid waste processing plants, Zoomlion now provides sanitation services to households, institutions and businesses nationwide. “We have come a long way, and today we are proud to serve almost every household in Ghana,” she said.

Mrs. Larbi added that Zoomlion is well positioned to support large-scale national sanitation initiatives, including youth employment programmes, and emphasised the company’s commitment to continued growth.
