A new survey by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has found that 68 percent of Ghanaians approve of President John Dramani Mahama’s performance in office, even as many citizens continue to express concerns about the rising cost of living.

The findings, released as part of the IEA’s latest national governance and public opinion assessment, indicate strong public backing for the President’s leadership in the early phase of his administration. According to the survey, a majority of respondents believe the government is taking steps in the right direction, particularly in managing the economy and restoring public sector confidence.

However, the report also highlights persistent anxiety over inflation, food prices and general household expenses. A significant portion of respondents cited the high cost of living as their primary concern, reflecting the economic pressures facing many families across the country.

Despite these challenges, the approval rating suggests that many citizens remain optimistic about the government’s policy direction. Analysts say this could be linked to recent economic recovery measures, fiscal consolidation efforts and renewed engagement with key sectors such as agriculture, energy and industry.

The IEA survey sampled respondents across all regions, covering diverse demographic groups to provide a nationally representative outlook. The think tank noted that while public approval remains relatively high, sustained support will depend on tangible improvements in living standards, job creation and price stability.

Political observers argue that the findings present both an opportunity and a warning for the administration. While public confidence appears stable, economic hardship remains a critical issue that could shape political sentiment in the months ahead.
