The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially condemned what it described as “unacceptable behaviour” displayed by players and officials during the TotalEnergies AFCON Morocco 2025 final between Morocco and Senegal. The strongly worded statement follows chaotic scenes that marred the highly anticipated final, which Senegal eventually won 1–0 after extra time.
In a statement released shortly after the match, CAF expressed deep concern over actions that undermined the spirit of fair play and the integrity of African football’s biggest tournament.
CAF’s official statement
CAF stated that it was “deeply disappointed by the conduct of certain players and officials during and after the AFCON 2025 final”, stressing that such behaviour “falls short of the values, ethics, and standards expected at a CAF competition.”
The football governing body reaffirmed its commitment to discipline and respect, noting that AFCON represents the pinnacle of African football and must be conducted in a manner that reflects professionalism and sportsmanship.

CAF further indicated that it has opened formal investigations into the incidents and will take appropriate disciplinary measures in line with its regulations. According to the statement, CAF emphasized that no individual or team is above the rules, regardless of the importance of the match or the emotions involved.
Key incidents that prompted CAF’s reaction
The condemnation follows a series of dramatic moments during the final that drew widespread attention across the football world.
One of the most notable incidents occurred late in regulation time after a controversial refereeing decision. Following a VAR review that resulted in a penalty decision, Senegalese players and members of the technical team briefly left the pitch in protest, bringing the match to a halt for several minutes. The unprecedented action sparked confusion, heightened tensions inside the stadium, and drew criticism from observers.
Another incident involved heated confrontations between players and match officials, with visible protests, aggressive gestures, and emotional outbursts as pressure mounted. Security personnel and team officials were forced to intervene to restore order before play could resume.

CAF noted that while passion is part of football, crossing the line into disorder and disrespect cannot be tolerated, particularly on a stage as significant as the AFCON final.
Maintaining the integrity of African football
Despite the controversy, CAF congratulated Senegal on their victory and praised both teams for their overall performances throughout the tournament. However, the organization made it clear that the events of the final must serve as a lesson.
CAF reiterated its responsibility to protect the image of African football globally, stressing that future tournaments will see strict enforcement of disciplinary codes to prevent similar occurrences.
As AFCON 2025 comes to a close, the final will be remembered not only for Senegal’s triumph, but also as a reminder that discipline and respect are as essential to the game as skill and passion. CAF’s response signals a firm stance aimed at preserving the credibility and dignity of Africa’s premier football competition.
