Ghana card to be mandatory for motor insurance policy registration effective January 2026

Starting January 2026, the Ghana card will be officially required for every motor insurance policy registration, authorities have announced. The new policy is part of a broader effort to strengthen identification protocols, reduce fraud in the insurance sector and enhance data accuracy in the national identity system.
Under the new regulations, insurance companies must verify a customer’s identity using the Ghana card before issuing a motor insurance policy. This requirement aims to mitigate fraudulent claims, ensure accurate driver records and improve compliance with national traffic and insurance regulations. It also aligns with government efforts to promote the Ghana card as the primary means of official identification for public and private services.
Insurance industry experts have welcomed the move, saying it will help reduce the issuance of fake policies and bolster trust in the sector. They explained that linking motor insurance to a unique national identifier makes it easier to track claims, verify vehicle ownership, and enforce penalties for uninsured drivers.
Vehicle owners and drivers are therefore advised to obtain or update their Ghana cards well ahead of January 2026 to avoid delays in policy acquisition. Many insurers are already communicating with clients about the upcoming requirement and providing guidance on verification procedures.
Road safety advocates have also endorsed the policy, arguing that it will enhance accountability among drivers and make enforcement of insurance laws more effective. They noted that uninsured driving remains a challenge and that clear identification through the Ghana card could help reduce road related financial losses for all stakeholders.
Government officials have stressed that the policy will be implemented with public education initiatives to ensure motorists are well informed about the changes. They also indicated that systems will be in place to support citizens who encounter difficulties with card registration or verification.
As the deadline approaches, many drivers and vehicle owners are expected to prioritise compliance with the new rule. The mandatory use of the Ghana card for motor insurance registration represents a significant step in strengthening regulatory frameworks and promoting transparent service delivery.
