“It is not a fund to make your family happy” — Roads Minister warns members of Road Maintenance Trust Fund

The Minister of Roads and Highways has sternly cautioned trustees and officials of the Road Maintenance Trust Fund (RMTF) that the fund must not be treated as a personal cash cow for family or private benefit. He emphasised that the fund’s purpose is strictly for road maintenance and infrastructure upkeep across Ghana, not for private enrichment.

During a recent stakeholder meeting, the Minister stated that recent concerns about mis-appropriation and misuse of resources allocated to road maintenance have raised alarm. He warned trustees that abuse of the fund would not be tolerated and called for strict adherence to transparency, accountability and proper procurement procedures.

He reminded members that public trust depends on the visible impact of road maintenance, improved highways, safer transport, and better infrastructure, not on financial benefitting a few individuals. The Minister urged all stakeholders to put national interest first and ensure that RMTF resources directly contribute to Ghana’s road network and transport safety.

He announced that the Ministry will introduce regular audits, stronger oversight mechanisms, and community reporting channels to track utilisation of Road Fund resources. Citizens were encouraged to hold officials accountable and report any suspected misuse or irregularities.

As Ghana continues to expand and rehabilitate its road infrastructure, the integrity of funding mechanisms like the RMTF remains crucial. The Minister’s warning aims to safeguard the fund’s mandate and restore public confidence in state-funded infrastructure initiatives.
