Over 13,000 Ghanaians already working in Qatar, we intend to double this number by next year — Ablakwa

Ghanaian lawmaker and MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that over 13,000 Ghanaians are currently working in Qatar under labour agreements. He added that Ghana intends to double this number by next year, in a move aimed at providing more foreign-employment opportunities for citizens.
Speaking at a public event, Ablakwa described Qatar as a key destination for Ghanaian job-seekers, citing ongoing demand for skilled and unskilled workers in various sectors. He explained that the plan to increase placements by 2026 is motivated by efforts to reduce unemployment in Ghana and provide remittance inflow that supports local livelihoods.
According to the MP, authorities are working to streamline recruitment processes, ensure ethical labour-migration practices, and negotiate fair contracts for prospective workers. He cautioned against illegal migration and urged those interested in foreign work to go through authorised channels to avoid exploitation.
The announcement comes at a time when thousands of Ghanaians continue to seek employment abroad due to economic pressures at home. Labour analysts note that while foreign employment offers income opportunities, it also carries risks including job insecurity, migrant-worker rights issues, and social costs of migration.
Advocacy groups say that if the plan succeeds, remittances from workers abroad could boost Ghana’s economy, contribute to household incomes, and help relieve pressure on domestic job markets. However, they emphasise the importance of ensuring that recruitment adheres to international labour standards and protects the welfare of migrants.
As the government moves forward with its foreign-employment expansion plans, many Ghanaian youths and families will be watching closely, hoping for better opportunities and safer labour migration pathways.
