Ghana Donates GH₵10 Million in Relief Aid to Sudan, Jamaica and Cuba Amid Crisis

Ghana has extended a significant humanitarian gesture in the form of a GH₵10 million relief package to support victims of conflict in Sudan and those affected by Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica and Cuba. The announcement, made on 7 November 2025 by President John Dramani Mahama, underscores Ghana’s longstanding tradition of international solidarity in times of crisis.

The assistance includes 2,400 bags of Ghana-produced rice, 540 bags of sugar, 377 boxes of assorted medications, 1,500 mattresses and 500 pillows, 100 cartons of fortified gari mix, 50,000 T-shirts, three 20-foot containers of mixed cocoa and chocolate products, 20 pieces of 500-litre water tanks, 20 hand-wash stations, 10 portable emergency toilets and assorted clothing items.

Distribution of the aid will follow a ratio of 50 per cent to Jamaica, 30 per cent to Cuba and 20 per cent dedicated to humanitarian efforts in Sudan via the International Red Cross.

President Mahama explained that the donation came in response to the devastating impacts of Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall on Jamaica on 28 October 2025 as a Category 5 storm before moving on to Cuba, alongside the ongoing war in Sudan that has caused massive displacement and human suffering. “Some of the atrocities, the genocide, and the humanitarian suffering that is taking place in Sudan are not something that belongs to the 21st century,” he stated.

He further commented that extreme weather events and climate-driven disasters are becoming all too common, likening hurricanes in the Caribbean to a game of Russian roulette. His remarks framed Ghana’s contribution not merely as charity, but as part of a moral and diplomatic commitment to global partnership and mutual aid.

The President also acknowledged the involvement of Ghanaian businesses and the private sector in the effort, recognising companies such as MTN, Pharmanova Ghana, Cocoa Processing Company, Terraprime Group, Duraplast and others for their support in supplying the goods that form part of the relief package.

For Sudan, where conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has resulted in what many international agencies describe as one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, Ghana’s intervention comes at a moment when global focus has shifted elsewhere. President Mahama emphasised that the crisis in Sudan has been largely overshadowed by other conflicts, stating simply: “Sudan is virtually becoming the forgotten war.”

For Jamaica and Cuba, the provision of food staples, mattresses and water tanks will contribute to ongoing efforts to rebuild infrastructure and provide support to communities devastated by Hurricane Melissa. The Jamaican High Commissioner to Ghana, H. E. Lincoln George Downer, conveyed gratitude on behalf of the recipient countries for Ghana’s timely demonstration of humanity and shared responsibility.

The relief package reflects Ghana’s foreign-policy posture of humanitarian diplomacy, reinforcing its role as an actor of compassion in international affairs. While the items delivered will not resolve all needs in the affected countries, President Mahama stressed that collective action, “if every country contributes something”, can make a meaningful difference.
